Evie Fowler

The Beat.

Hey friends!
Welcome to my new column, The Beat. This year, I hope to share my knowledge of and passion for music with the St. Mary's community. I especially hope to write about the revived music industry in Memphis. We are living in such a cool music scene, full of amazing artists, yet many people do not pay any attention to it. So, all that to say, I hope that you use The Beat as a source to find information on new songs, concerts, and musicians this year!
Happy reading, Evie

One Voice goes to La La Land

It’s not often that someone you know has the opportunity to sing at the Emmy Awards. This September a group of 12 high school students from Briarcrest had that chance.

In September, Briarcrest School’s elite acapella group, One Voice, traveled not once but twice to Los Angeles, California to sing at the Emmy Awards.

One Voice is described by Mady Thornburg, a second-year member, as “one of the best things [she] has ever done.” Thornburg is a senior at Briarcrest and has been singing ever since she could talk. Her love for music led her to audition for One Voice where she is now a soprano. When asked about the group's director, J.D. Frizell, Thornburg quickly exclaimed, “He is a musical genius! It’s crazy!” She further described him by saying, “He is so nice and so understanding, but he is definitely one of the hardest workers I have ever seen in my entire life, and he is so dedicated to music.”

As One Voice’s dedicated leader, Frizzell is no stranger to frequent requests for the group to sing at different events; however, this more recent request is one that has made the acapella group even more well-known than it already was. A member of the Emmy Awards staff saw a video of the group online and messaged Frizzell to see if he would be interested in having them sing at the 70th Emmy Awards. Of course, he jumped on the opportunity, which gave these 12 young musicians the chance of a lifetime. They sang on the red carpet as all of the guests waltzed their way out of the awards and again at the Governor’s Ball just after the Emmys.
Youth all across Memphis are doing such amazing things, so stay tuned!
To keep up with One Voice and their upcoming projects, like their album release in May, be sure to follow them on social media.
