In the weekend between Springfest and Black Friday, the SMS swim team still found time to travel to the state competition in Tupelo, Mississippi.
The team placed 17th overall in the state. Grace Ciaramitaro (10) came in 3rd in the 100-yard backstroke and 7th in the 200-yard individual medley (fly, back, breast, free strokes).
Riley Stewart (9) said, “It [the state competition] was split up, so that definitely hindered our ability to compete, but overall we performed the best that we could with the circumstances we had been given.”
Because of COVID restrictions, the team was competing against only Memphis teams, but the scores were ranked out of the entire state. Although this state competition was different from previous ones, the team still performed well and found it to be a fun send off for their senior team members.
The inability to travel this season prevented the usual team bonding, but state was their chance to do so, especially since the team’s seniors finally received their “senior night.”
Senior Madeleine Hays (12) said, “It’s going to be weird not having a team that you can always go to.”
Stewart said, “They [the seniors] are a critical part of the team family, but I am excited to see what next year brings at state.”
