After completing just over half the season, the St. Mary’s basketball team is still proving that they are a force to be reckoned with. Even with the occasional precautionary quarantine, the team has won seven games so far, potentially giving them the chance to go to state.
Most recently, the team beat St. Agnes 50-47. The team has also had impressive victories against ECS, St. George’s and MHEA.
“We have been having a better season than usual, and the team is super close because there’s only 12 of us. Even though this season is weird, we’re having a lot of fun and doing really well,” Mary Claire Carney (11) said.
With five teams in the region, they need to finish the season as one of the top three teams to secure a spot at state. They have five games left, in which they play the region teams for a second time. If the team wins against SBA and St. Agnes again, they should have a shot at state.
“We just need to keep trying to make sure we play the whole game strong and don’t play down to the level of our opponents. It’s just the mamba mentality,” Ellie Smith (11) said.
