By Nora EiknerArt by Emily Smith On September 8, 39-year-old comedian John Mulaney appeared on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” after a months-long hiatus spent in rehab treating alcohol and cocaine abuse. He described his struggles with a drug problem in depth. Despite the serious content, the interview with Meyers was a laughter-filled, open conversation.
Towards the beginning of the interview, Meyers said, “The intervention, how was it for you?” and Mulaney burst into laughter. Rather than tiptoeing around it, Mulaney received the topic with open arms and a smile. They talked in detail about the intervention, which was led by Meyers, Fred Armisen, and some of their fellow friends and comedians. Meghan Aslin (12), who has Mulaney as her iPhone lock screen, said, “As a comedian in general, the thing usually tends to be finding those dark parts of yourself and turning it into jokes, and I think he’s done that with his substance abuse.” It’s encouraging to see so many people appreciate an attempt to talk about substance abuse and mental health issues with jokes, rather than with the usual sobbing and melodramatic music we see on television. Honest conversations about difficult topics like the one between Meyers and Mulaney should continue to be represented in the media. The two friends looked back on these seemingly painful moments with grace and hope. Said Mulaney, “Sitting here now, I’m so grateful to you and everyone [at the intervention] for saving my life.”
