By Meghan AslinEarly February is known for Valentine’s Day. However, at St. Mary’s, February is mock trial season.
This mock trial season has been anything but boring. With a case about feuding chicken restaurants similar to Popeye’s and Chick-Fil-A (including chicken suit-wearing protestors and a screw found in a chicken sandwich), the St. Mary’s girls had fun studying the ins and outs of this case. Over the course of the competition, both Team Ocean and Team Sky, the two St. Mary’s mock trial teams, argued the case as both plaintiff or defense against St. George’s, Cooper Yeshiva, Briarcrest, Christian Brothers and MUS. Both teams were undefeated after the week of trials and they faced off against each other on Monday Feb. 10 with Ocean taking the win. Though St. Mary’s fell to White Station in the district championship, they are guaranteed a spot at the state competition in Nashville on March 20-21. Members of the mock trial team are Lily Curlin, Rose Rezaee, Shifa Panjwani, Ansley Skipper, Ria Patel, Sriya Jampana, Riya Valaulikar, Victoria Ouyang, Hita Mohan, Maggie Rosenblum, Laura Issacs, Camille Smith, Anjali Shah, Kalen Ingram, Saanya Srivastava, Ana Albrecht, Astrid Balink, and Mallory Miller. The team is coached by alumnae attorneys Kimbrough Brown Mullins (‘76) and Tabitha Francisco McNabb (‘78) along with attorney and St. Mary’s dad Jeff Rosenblum. Others assisting to prepare the team are sponsor Dr. Steakley, Federal District Judge Thomas L. Parker (father of Ellen Parker, 11) and prosecutor alumna Austin Nichols (‘09).
