“She always made chapel more enjoyable, and now that she is at church I get to see her every Sunday,” said Chloie Madden, a sophomore at St. Mary’s and a member of Calvary Church. “I know I have someone to talk to if I have a question about anything,” she continued.

Reverend Katherine Bush (‘93) was a chaplain, teacher, and role model at St. Mary’s for over twelve years. She taught the senior-only religious elective “Meaning of Life” class alongside Mrs. Ray, creating a space in which her students could explore all of life’s tough questions. Rev. Bush also helped initiate the founding of MoSic. Rev. Bush’s countless contributions to St. Mary’s has made the community stronger than ever.

Rev. Bush’s favorite part of St. Mary's was chapel; she loved when students and guests would sing and tell meaningful stories. She appreciated the strong sense of fellowship that surrounded chapel.

In her farewell chapel, she said, “I love it when somebody is super vulnerable, somebody is like ‘this is my story, this is who I am.’”

She wholeheartedly believed in St. Mary’s and always encouraged others. Rev. Bush was, and still is, unconditionally supportive.

“She was never content to let SMS just stay as it is,” said Rainey Segears (‘05), assistant chaplain and religion teacher. “She always had a vision for how our school could be more: more welcoming, more compassionate to the individual student, more true to its values.”

Although she left St. Mary's, Rev. Bush will continue to encourage passion and kindness wherever she goes. She will miss the hum of the school, but she is looking excitedly towards her new chapter in life.

Concluding her final chapel talk, Rev. Bush said, “I like it when St. Mary’s is courageous and brave, so be courageous and brave.”
