By Isabel CamposFrom Nov. 9-11, 23 St. Mary’s students, led by Dr. Lyon and Mrs. Avant, attended the annual Model United Nations (MUN) conference in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. At the conference, students presented their resolutions — documents listing issues that should be addressed. Rose Rezaee (10), Margaret Couloubaritsis (10), Emily Rodgers (10) and Laura Isaacs (10) won Outstanding Resolution, and Ansley Skipper (10) won Outstanding Delegate. Katie Krahn (11) was invited to the Summit, a small group of eight delegates that come together to address one problem and collaborate to create one resolution. The Model UN website says that the experience develops students’ “skills including research techniques, writing, public speaking, problem-solving, conflict resolution, compromise, and cooperation.” Mrs. Avant says, “It forces them [the students] to look at world issues through a new perspective and gives a broader vision of what is going on in the world.”
