The week of February 19, 2021, Memphis had the most snow it had seen in 53 years. With about 10 inches of snow and nine consecutive days of freezing temperatures, Memphis was witnessing a “snowpocalypse.”

Memphis has only seen snow of this magnitude in a 4-day period three other times in its history:
  • 18 inches in 1892
  • 14.3 inches in 1963
  • 17.3 inches in 1968

Although the snowy landscape brought lots of fun and some much-needed days off, the extreme temperatures caused many pipes to freeze. The frozen and burst pipes allowed bacteria easier access into the drinking water, making our famed Memphis water unsafe to drink. On February 18, MLGW issued a precautionary boil water advisory, as well as recommended customers to conserve their water.
