Margie Peeler. Jean Jackson. Mary Harper Robinson. Kate Herzke. These girls are your Turkey basketball seniors.
They represent St. Mary’s not only on the basketball court, but also on the soccer field, on the volleyball court, in the classroom, in the band room, on stage, and in the greater Memphis community.
Their teammates say each senior plays an irreplaceable role. Margie “always has good feedback, making us better.”  Jean is “constantly setting up other people and running the plays to benefit the team as a whole.” Mary Harper is “always laughing and keeping the team in good spirits.” Finally, Kate is “energetic and cheers and encourages everyone, on and off the court.”
Though their teammates will definitely miss them next year, they have appreciated their leadership this season. Sophie Morrow (10) says, “The seniors have been a huge help with encouraging everyone to try their best. At the beginning of the season we were running sprints, and someone was on about to quit, but the seniors stepped up and most of the team finished the last with her.” Sophie also notes that their leadership abilities are also apparent in their determination to keep the team fighting through every game. “The seniors always make sure everyone leaves the gym feeling content, even after a loss.” When asked about the basketball seniors, Hattie Fogarty (11) said, “I’ve been playing basketball with these girls since middle school, and it’s so exciting seeing them take on their last year of basketball, even though it makes me sad that this is last season I have with them.”
As for this season, the basketball team started strong with a 53-6 win over Margolin Hebrew Academy, but has since had a run of losses with close scores. The seniors are excited for senior night tonight against Fayette Academy at 6 pm in Wilmott gym. Come cheer on your turkeys!

I played basketball back in the day, and while I was not able to make it professionally, I am still happy that I tried. Sure, basketball is not a sport for the nonathletic, but I really hoped that I can make it work back then. I had a lot of hope back then, and it never amounted to much. Today, I work as a coach for a high school team. I want to groom players who can make it with hard work.
