Panera crossed our minds, but we wanted something different. Then, Lizzie Moody (12) thought of the new breakfast spot, Southall Cafe, located on the corner of Mendenhall and Poplar in the old Tobacco Corner building. Just a quick glance at the online menu had us calling the restaurant to ask for availability. When we arrived, the filled parking lot showed their newfound popularity. Cars wrapped around the building and spilled over into the construction site next door. After gathering outside the door to wait for our name to be called, we followed our hostess to a table on the bright and open patio. Many families were already sitting outside with their children in a perfect gathering place for catch-ups and post soccer game brunches. After some avid menu scanning, we each placed our orders and were not disappointed. Here are our thoughts: Photo courtesy of Lizzie Moody. The Bluff Omelette was divine, featuring an omelet topped with mushrooms, chives, and queso fresco. They served, alongside the omelet, a bed of arugula and a few tomatoes. This breakfast dish completely satisfied my craving for a savory breakfast. An avid iced coffee lover, I ordered an iced coffee which also exceeded my expectations because of the perfect ratio of ice, almond milk, and coffee. -Lizzie Moody Photo courtesy of Jessica Joshi. The veggie burger was a hearty Beyond Burger patty on a vegan bun. On the menu, it is paired with caramelized onions, arugula, and mushroom herb sauce, but as a burger purist, I opted for no toppings. To accompany my burger, I chose a side of sweet potato fries. Southall makes them waffle-style, which was perfect for some ketchup-dipping. My best judgement of a place’s coffee menu is the regular black drip coffee, which did not disappoint. This smooth and bold cup of joe was Southall’s very own signature blend by Griffith Roasting Company. -Jessica Joshi I too got the Bluff Omelette. I simply could not resist the “caramelized Bluff City fungi” the menu promised. The meal was delicately scrumptious. A fluffy layered egg topped with a light cheese and tasty mushrooms sitting in a crème fraîche sauce made this omelette lover quite happy! I also ordered a warm drip coffee with almond milk. The Southall Café House Blend Coffee by Griffith Roasting Company did not disappoint my coffee-loving taste buds. The blend is a bold rich flavor and can be purchased to take home. -Chloé Webster According to the cafe’s website, Southall Café’s owners Mark Pender and John Bobango work to bring flavorful made-from-scratch dishes to East Memphis. After getting the chance to taste some of the menu items, we are excited to make another trip and try more of the locally sourced, fresh food.
