Recently, though, a new attraction has opened. The Memphian Hotel is owned by the Loebs, family of next year’s Student council President Tallulah Taylor (11) and rising freshman Clementine Taylor. Mary Seay Loeb, established jewelry designer, recently brightened the courtyard of Overton Square with her handmade mosaic celebrating the life of Memphian minister John Kilzer and continues to brighten Overton Square with her artistic touch in interior design of The Memphian Hotel. Photo courtesy of Meghan Aslin When asked to describe the design of the hotel, daughter Tallulah Taylor (11) likened the style to “the psychedelic living room of your cool aunt who has traveled the world and then settled back down in Midtown.” She continued, “It’s full of classic elements but with a bohemian vibe.” The hotel’s website states that The Memphian is a member of the Marriott Tribute Portfolio, a “family of independent boutique hotels bound by their indie spirit,” which allows for deviation from the normally expected design of a hotel. Photo courtesy of Meghan Aslin Taylor explains that “the interior reflects the past of Overton Square with oversized photographs on the walls of the thriving Square in the 70s. There are also nods to the theater such as a large acrylic sign over the piano in the lobby that reads ‘All Drama Must Remain on Stage.’”
Overton Square prides itself on being a significant central area for Memphis theater and arts. The Memphian strives to continue this legacy, as it plans to collaborate with Playhouse on the Square, Hattiloo and New Ballet to create a regional theater district to serve the broader mid-south community.
