Book Club starts the new year right with some great novels!

On Monday, February 11th, the new SMS student-teacher book club debuted with a compelling discussion about “The Secret History” by Donna Tartt. There was a great turnout; about 14 students and 10 faculty members attended the meeting. The book tells the story of a group of college students dealing with the aftermath of their friend’s murder — a murder they committed and then covered up; it is an intense and detailed story. When asked whether or not she liked the book choice, senior Pooja Talati (12) said, “I thought the book was very cool. The first hundred pages or so were a little slow for me, but somewhere in the middle the plot picked up, and I found myself not able to put it down. I liked that, instead of talking about who committed the murder, Tartt chose to write about why the murder was committed, which I feel is more rare in murder mystery literature.”

The book club’s next read, “Where the Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens, will be discussed during lunch in the Weir Study on Monday, March 25. This novel tells the gripping tale of a girl named Kya Clark who is abandoned by her family and must survive the marshes of South Carolina alone; it offers insight into the wild beauty of nature and tells a heart-wrenching coming of age tale.
